You've probably heard us talking by now about the CrossFit Games Open Qualifiers and perhaps you're interested in participating....
The Open is the first stage of qualification on the road to the CrossFit Games. Thousands of competitors from around the world will register to participate in this online event. Each week, for five weeks, starting Feb 22/2012 CrossFit HQ will release a workout. Participants will complete the workout either at a registered affiliate (like us) or video tape their performance and submit it online. Athletes will be able to see how their performance stacks up vs other competitors in their region and around the world. Last year, the top 60 men and the top 60 women advanced to regionals, which were held in Vancouver for the Canada West region. We will also be able to send a team for the affiliate competition if CrossFit BRIO finishes among the top boxes in western Canada. No word has been given yet about how many athletes or teams will qualify for regionals or where they will be held this year.
CrossFit HQ designs the workouts to be inclusive of as many athletes as possible. You are allowed to scale any workout, but once you do you are eliminated from further competition or qualification so it is best to try to Rx any workout that comes up, even if you end up with only 1 rep or point. If you are thinking of joining our team and participating in The Open, here are some basic skills you should have (or aim to have by Feb):
- Chest to bar pullups
- Double Unders
- Toes to bar/Knees to Elbows
- Push Ups
- Box Jumps (24")
- and be able to handle most prescribed weights
Having other, more advanced skills such as dips, pistols, handstand pushups, and muscle ups will seperate you from the massess should they come up in a workout, but will likely not eliminate you from competition if you cannot do them.
Please talk to Jocelyn or David ASAP if you'd like to participate and we will get you set up with a plan to increase your awesomeness. The Open starts 3 months from TODAY. Lets do it!
